FAQ Section

Tell me more about this Barcode Database?

We are a centralised database of information about NZ products and barcode numbers. We store and manage product information that is associated with each barcode – the information we provide includes product names, descriptions, prices, manufacturer details, and other relevant data. The barcode numbers in this database were either purchased from, or registered through, the International Barcodes Network

How do I look up a barcode number or a product?

You can look up a barcode number or product by using the Search tool box on the top of our home page. If you can’t find it on our website, try doing a google search of the barcode number as it may be listed in a different database.

The information on our database comes from the International Barcode Registry (ibnreg.org) and the International Barcodes Database (barcodesdatabase.org), which are both run by the International Barcodes Network.

You can search for a barcode number (or product/brand) by visiting the International Barcode Registry website.

Which products and barcodes are included in this database?

This database only includes data on barcodes that have been purchased from, or registered through the International Barcodes Network (and it’s member sites around the world). The International Barcodes Network runs two databases – https://barcodesdatabase.org/ and https://ibnreg.org/. This site includes NZ products that have been registered in those databases.

Is this a complete database of all barcode numbers and products?

This is not a complete database. We only provide information about barcode numbers that have been issued by, or registered through, the International Barcodes Network.

What is the International Barcodes Network (IBN)?

The International Barcodes Network (IBN) is a large global network of over 100 different barcode suppliers and websites worldwide.

How to Register Your Barcodes

If you want to register your barcodes you have two options:

If you don’t have a barcode number yet:

Buy barcodes from either Buy Barcodes NZ (buybarcodes.co.nz) or Barcodes NZ (barcodes.co.nz). They are both authorised members of the International Barcodes Network (IBN) therefore their barcodes are eligible for free registration.

After you purchase a barcode, you will receive an email containing your barcode, and instructions for how to register it on the https://barcodesdatabase.org/ online database (products registered on that database will also automatically appear in the https://ibnreg.org/ database).

If you already have a barcode number for your product:

If you already have a barcode number(s) from a different barcode seller then you can register it by purchasing Barcode Registration here (you will need to provide proof that you are the legal owner of the barcode).

After that you will receive an email with instructions for how to register your barcode on the https://barcodesdatabase.org/ online database (products registered on that database will also automatically appear in the https://ibnreg.org/ database).

What are the benefits of barcode registration?

Barcode registration is not compulsory (you can use your barcode numbers without registering your barcodes), however registration will increase the profile of your product and brand on the internet. Barcode registration makes it easier for retailers and customers to find your product and company information online. Barcode registration helps prevent theft or accidental misuse of your barcodes (it provides extra proof that the barcodes belong to you).

After you’ve registered your barcodes, your product and barcode information will appear in multiple online barcode databases – including this website, the International Barcode Registry (ibnreg.org) and the International Barcodes Database. Your barcode and product information will be visible in Google search engine results, and when scanned by the Zebra barcode app (available on Android or Apple phones).

How to Buy Barcodes

You can buy EAN-13 retail barcodes from either Buy Barcodes NZ (buybarcodes.co.nz) or Barcodes NZ (barcodes.co.nz). They are both authorised members of the International Barcodes Network, and they both sell certified and registered barcodes in New Zealand.

The barcodes will be sent to you automatically by email straight away. The email will contain instructions for how to register and use your barcodes. After you’ve registered your barcodes, your product and barcode information will appear in multiple online barcode databases – including the International Barcode Registry (ibnreg.org) and the International Barcodes Database. Your barcode and product information will be visible in Google search engine results, and when scanned by the Zebra barcode app (available on Android or Apple phones).
